Ethanol Vehicles
There are many manufacturers of ethanol vehicles. Since the year 1982 the majority of vehicles produced are able to run on blends of 90 percent gasoline and 10 percent ethanol. However some drivers want a higher percentage of ethanol and a lower percentage of gasoline. For them there are vehicles called flexible fuel vehicles. They can run on as much as 85 percent ethanol fuel, or they can run on gasoline. They have also been produced since the 1980s and some drivers may not even know they already have one.
To see whether or not your current automobile is a flexible fuel vehicle, check the owner's manual. There is also a sticker inside the fuel fill door that may tell you. Many manufacturers these days make FFVs including Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Ford, Chrysler and many others. The flexible fuel vehicles made today don't lose any performance power when they use a primarily ethanol fuel such as E85. However, you'll find that these vehicles get between 20 and 30 percent less mileage per gallon when using the E85 variety of fuel as compared to traditional gasoline. This is one downside for drivers who desire high gas mileage. Also cold weather starting may be difficult so ethanol may not be the best bet for drivers in a consistently frigid climate.
Most every automobile maker will have an E85 compatible vehicle in their collection. Once you've decided upon a flex-fuel vehicle by your preferred manufacturer, you have to find a place to fill it up. With more than 400 stations offering this type of fuel it shouldn't be too difficult. It all depends on where you are located. You may want to investigate the availability of E85 filling stations near you before making the decision to buy a flex-fuel vehicle. Of course, because these vehicles are flexible they can also run on pure gasoline or a blend that is primarily gasoline with a small percentage of ethanol added.
When visiting dealerships and contemplating manufacturers of ethanol vehicles, comparison shopping is a must. You may have a particular auto maker you prefer. That is fine, just make sure you check at different dealerships to see who has the best value on the vehicle you want. A good dealership will be clean and professional. The staff should be knowledgeable and helpful but not pushy. Buying an ethanol compatible vehicle can be a smooth and pleasant transaction when you work with a top notch car dealership.
