Ethanol Stock

Are you considering a purchase of ethanol stock? If so, your first step should be to learn as much about this renewable source of fuel as you possibly can. A good investor is an informed one who has done their homework regarding their potential investments. Ethanol is alcohol, the same kind found in libations you drink at cocktail parties. However the fuel type is a bit different because it has been treated with a denaturant to make it undrinkable. Usually this denaturant is a small amount of gasoline.

There are two primary ways of making ethanol -- dry mill and wet mill. Dry mill is the cheapest method used by manufacturers and is common when the grain in question is corn, wheat or sugarcane. Wet mill is a procedure where the biomass is soaked in a solution to make it easier to process into ethanol, which is seen with corn husks, cellulose and other fibrous sources of ethanol. Whether or not a company who produces this biofuel uses wet or dry mill depends on many factors including what they deem most appropriate for the material they are using.

Supporters of ethanol claim it is much better for the environment because of the reduction in harmful polluting emissions. Detractors say the emissions from ethanol are just as bad because in a large city like L.A. they could negatively affect individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma. Another battle cry of ethanol supporters is that this is renewable and can be produced over and over, unlike petroleum based gasoline which comes from a limited source. On the other side opponents say the production of ethanol will detract from our food source.

As you can see there are two sides to every story. This is why when contemplating ethanol stock you read the Wall Street Journal, any information you can find on ethanol as a fuel source and anything else you deem helpful. You may also want to consult with your broker if you use one. If not, do some research on the do-it-yourself trading sites like Ameritrade and Scott Trade to name just two of the many. Whether you invest online by yourself or with a traditional stockbroker tread carefully around the ethanol issue as only time will tell its value or lack thereof.
