Ethanol Market
If you are considering an investment into ethanol, the first step is educating yourself on the details of this alternative fuel. Ethanol is a form of alcohol, the same alcohol found in beverages. To be made into fuel, the alcohol is blended with a denaturant like gasoline to make it unfit for consumption. There are different kinds of ethanol blend fuels. Most every gas station offers conventional gasoline to which a small percentage of ethanol has been added to make the fuel burn cleaner and reduce emissions.
There is also a blend called E85. This means the ratio is 85 percent ethanol to 15 percent gasoline. The end result is a primarily ethanol fuel which is sold at more than 400 gas stations around the country. There are actually millions of vehicles from top manufacturers running on E85, including those by Nissan, Mercedes-Benz and Chrysler to name a few. You may already have a flexible fuel vehicle and not even know it. A flexible fuel vehicle, or FFV as it is called, is a vehicle that can run on E85 as well as conventional gasoline.
This may be helpful when winter comes or if you live in a climate that is cold a lot. The reason is because ethanol is notorious for having startup problems in colder weather as compared to gasoline. For many consumers, the reduced emissions and pollution, and the lower prices of ethanol, are worth the hassle. However, although the price of ethanol may be lower than gasoline you will also get less miles to the gallon. On average drivers have reported between 10 and 30 percent less miles per gallon when using ethanol. These are all issues both drivers and investors interested in ethanol should consider for themselves.
To learn more about the ethanol market consider performing some independent research. The Internet is a great tool because there are so many different websites out there devoted to both investing and ethanol fuel. You may also want to check out some books on the subject such as Ethanol and Biodiesel: What You Need to Know by Terry Boudreaux and David Givens. Of course you can also speak to a knowledgeable investment professional who can help you build a solid portfolio based on your preferences and needs.
