Buy Ethanol
In the media lately you've probably heard a lot about ethanol. This renewable fuel is being touted as an alternative to gasoline and a saving grace to the environment. But is it all it's cracked up to be? The best way for consumers to understand the ethanol issue is to learn more about it. Ethanol is a plant derived fuel usually made from corn, wheat or sugarcane. You can buy ethanol fuel at more than 400 gas stations around the country. Most all conventional gasoline contains a small percentage of ethonal as an additive to help reduce emissions.
The Internet is the perfect tool to find an ethanol provider near you. The fuel sold at these stations is called E85, which means it is 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. The benefits are numerous. First of all, this fuel is supposed to be better for the environment because of the dramatic reduction in harmful polluting emissions that are destroying our ozone layer. Also, ethanol is made from renewable sources unlike gasoline which comes from a limited supply of petroleum derived fossil fuels. Of course there are some downsides you should know about before you decide on ethanol.
Ethanol is harder to get started in the winter, so if you live in a wintry climate you may not want this fuel. In the winter, those with flex-fuel vehicles or FFVs as they're called can switch to a higher percentage of gasoline. When it comes to miles per gallon, E85 gives you around 30 percent less according to various online reports. And, some nay sayers claim ethanol production takes valuable corn and wheat from the world's food source. Currently cellulose ethanol is being considered as a solution to this problem because it is made from inedible plant fiber.
If you do decide to go for ethanol, you'll need a car that is able to accept this type of fuel. Many of today's car manufacturers sell vehicles that can take E85 fuel. If you want to keep your current vehicle but it is not compatible, a conversion can be done so that it can use ethanol based fuel. If you're not sure whether or not E85 fuel is available near you, do an online search. Thanks to the popularity of ethanol there are now a variety of sites that list E85 filling stations around the country and even include their up to date gasoline and E85 prices.
